MARYLAND — Martin Luther King Jr. Day isn't just a federal holiday and day of service — it's also a chance to visit national parks that normally charge entrance fees. The next fee-free day scheduled by the National Park Service is Monday, Jan. 20.

体育投注网址It's one of a few chances each year to visit these parks for free after at various parks on Jan. 1, 2020. The entrance fees at Assateague Island National Seashore went up from $20 per vehicle to $25 and from $10 per person to $15; the fees at Antietam National Battlefield increased from $15 per vehicle to $20 and from $7 per person on Jan. 1; and fees at Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park increased from $15 per vehicle to $20 and from $7 per person to $10 at the first of the month.

The additional revenue will be used to pay for deferred maintenance across the system of 419 parks, historic and cultural sites, and monuments, the National Park Service said.

: The C&O Canal follows the route of the Potomac River for 184.5 miles from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland.

: 5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo, Maryland, off of MacArthur Boulevard adjacent to Glen Echo Park. Guided interpretive tours of the unfurnished house occur at the top of every hour, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

: 2400 East Fort Avenue in Baltimore. Regular Hours: Park Grounds and Parking Lot, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm; Star Fort, 9:00 am - 4:45 pm; Visitor Center, 9:00 am - 4:45 pm. Scheduled are offered daily.

: 13551 Fort Washington Road, Fort Washington. The fort is open 9:00 - 4:30 daily. Grounds are open until sunset.
